Is It That Simple To Update Your Video Drivers?

Video card drivers are usually "out of sight, out of mind" for most computer users. The machine come with everything already installed and working, so why bother? In most cases, a computer will work for years without any addition to the video card drivers being necessary. However, having the latest drivers installed is never a bad idea, and it is even possible to buy software which will scan your system and tell you when new drivers are available for download. Such software is not free, but it is a relatively inexpensive one-off expense.

If you find out that your video card drivers are out of date and you need to replace them, it is simple enough to do. The first step you need to take is to find out which video card you actually have. Assuming that you are using Windows XP, this can be done by first of all right clicking on the desktop. This will bring up a drop down menu, with an option to select 'Properties'. Once this is done, you can see the display control panel.

By selecting 'Settings', and then 'Advanced', you should come to a page which has an 'adapter' tab. This will show you the make and type of your video card. Once you know who the manufacturer is, you should find it easy to locate their website. If you don't know the exact URL, use a search engine. There should be a link on the site to 'video card drivers', or similar wording. If you can't find anything, look or support pages.

Once you have located the right downloads, you can choose the one for your exact model. Download the file to your computer. If you are on a slow dial-up connection, this may take a few minutes. Double click on the downloaded file, and you will be presented with full instructions for installing the file. You may have to reboot your system before any changes take effect, but that will not need to be done immediately. As soon as you do restart your system, you may notice a difference. It is quite likely that your screen resolution will have changed.

Change this back to the settings you were most comfortable with, and you will have completed the job of updating your video card drivers. Any quirks which were troubling you before should now be consigned to the past, and your video card should now be functioning exactly as you would want it to. Just be sure to continue to check for future updates, to make sure that you always have the latest version of video card drivers for your video card. This should be a problem, now that you know how easy it is to update your video card drivers.
